Retaining Caps

Retaining caps for plasma cutting torches - the outer component that holds the consumable stack together and takes the mechanical abuse.

What it does

The retaining cap clamps electrode, swirl ring, nozzle and shield into a sealed stack with the correct internal gas passages. If it is not holding the stack tight and square, the arc is not centred, and everything downstream of that suffers - bevelled cuts, rapid nozzle wear, and in the worst case damage to the torch head itself.

Check the threads, not the outside

Retaining caps are the part most often cross-threaded, because they are removed and refitted at every consumable change. A cap that no longer runs on smoothly is telling you something. Heat-cycled and damaged threads let the stack loosen in use, which is how a consumable change turns into a torch replacement.

Replace them on condition rather than running them until they seize.

IHS tab matters on a table

Some caps carry an ohmic initial-height-sensing tab used by CNC tables to find the plate surface before piercing. A cap without the tab will not sense, and a table that cannot sense height will pierce at the wrong standoff. Order the variant that matches your setup - they look nearly identical.

Series specific

Powermax 30/45, Powermax 600/800/900 and HPR130/260 caps are not interchangeable. Bring the torch or send a photograph of the head if you are unsure.
