Stick Machines
Stick welding machines - dual-voltage portables, engine-driven and battery-powered welders for work away from a power drop, and multi-process inverters that run stick alongside MIG and TIG.
Stick is the process that works when nothing else will
No shielding gas to carry or lose to the wind. Tolerant of rust, mill scale, paint and galvanising that would ruin a MIG weld. Workable outdoors in weather, at the top of a ladder, and on material you have no realistic way of cleaning first. For field repair and structural work, stick remains the correct answer and not a compromise.
Getting power to the arc
- Dual-voltage portables. The SanStick 140S at 9.9 lbs and the 160S with power factor correction. Both auto-switch between 120 and 240V, so the same machine works off a shop circuit or a household outlet.
- Engine-driven. The TurboFusion 195 Pro brings its own power. For sites with no service at all, where you can carry fuel.
- Battery-powered. The Stryker 150A-B and MapleWeld EcoFusion 150X. Arcs with no generator, no cord and no exhaust - which is what makes them workable indoors, in occupied buildings and anywhere noise is a problem.
- Multi-process. The SanMIG 200MF and 250MF and the SanARG 180AP all run stick in addition to their primary process.
On a 120V circuit, expect less
A dual-voltage machine on 120V delivers meaningfully lower output than the same machine on 240V. That is enough for 3/32" rod on light work, and it is not enough to run 1/8" rod hard. Size on the figure for the supply you will actually plug into.
Match the rod to the machine, not the other way round
Some electrodes need DC reverse polarity, some run on AC, and cellulosic rods such as 6010 need a machine with enough open-circuit voltage and arc force to keep the dig going. Check the electrode's requirement against the machine before you buy either - we stock the full electrode range and can tell you what will run.
Rod storage is not optional
Low-hydrogen electrodes absorb moisture from the air, and that moisture goes into the weld as hydrogen cracking days after the job looked finished. Opened 7018 belongs in a rod oven, not in the van.
