3M
3M respiratory and eye protection for welding, grinding and cutting - the 6000 Series reusable half facepiece, the 8293 P100 disposable respirator, SecureFit 100 safety glasses and Speedglas outside protection plates.
Welding fume needs a particulate filter, not a dust mask
Welding fume is sub-micron metal oxide. A nuisance dust mask does not stop it. The minimum for steel fume is an N95 class filter; P100 filters capture 99.97% of particles and are oil-resistant, which is why they are the default for stainless, galvanized and any work where cutting fluid or oil mist is present.
- 8293 P100 - disposable, with an exhalation valve that keeps heat and moisture down under a helmet.
- 6000 Series half facepiece - reusable body with replaceable filters. Lower running cost for daily welders, and the filters can be changed to suit the job.
Fit is the protection
A respirator that leaks at the seal protects nobody. In Canada, selection and fit testing are covered by CSA Z94.4. Facial hair at the seal line defeats any tight-fitting respirator - for bearded welders, a powered air (PAPR) helmet is the practical answer. See all respirators and PAPR helmets.
Eyes under the helmet
Wear safety glasses under the welding helmet. Slag and wire fragments fly when the hood is up for chipping and grinding, which is when most eye injuries happen. Browse safety eyewear.
Speedglas outside plates are in helmet lenses and accessories.
