Grinding Discs
Depressed centre grinding wheels for heavy stock removal, weld dressing and bevel preparation.
Grinding wheel or flap disc
A grinding wheel is thicker, more aggressive and removes material faster than a flap disc. It is the right tool for knocking down a heavy weld cap, dressing a flame-cut edge, or preparing a bevel - work where speed of removal matters and the finish is going to be addressed separately.
Where you want removal and finish in one operation, use a flap disc instead.
Run them at the correct angle
Type 27 wheels are designed to grind on the face at roughly 15 to 30 degrees. Grinding on the edge of a Type 27 wheel is how they break, and a disintegrating wheel at 11,000 RPM is a serious injury.
Material-specific wheels are not marketing
Aluminum loads a standard wheel almost instantly - the swarf packs into the abrasive and the wheel stops cutting and starts rubbing, generating enough heat to smear the aluminum rather than remove it. Aluminum-specific wheels are formulated to shed swarf.
Stainless wheels are made contaminant-free, without the iron, sulphur and chlorine that ordinary wheels can transfer into the surface and that cause rusting and pitting later.
RPM rating is a hard limit
Every wheel carries a maximum safe RPM. Fitting a wheel rated below your grinder's speed is how wheels come apart. Check it, and keep the guard on - the guard is what stands between you and the fragments.
Retire a wheel when it is worn down
A wheel worn near the hub has far less usable face and is more prone to breaking. Change it.
