MIG Nozzles

MIG nozzles are the shortest-life consumable on a welding gun and the one most shops under-stock. A nozzle with spatter build-up restricts gas flow long before it looks worn out, and porosity that gets blamed on the wire or the gas is very often a nozzle problem.

Choosing a profile

• Tapered nozzles narrow the gas stream and give better access into fillets, corners and tight joints. The usual choice for structural and fabrication work.
• Cylindrical nozzles deliver a wider, more even shielding envelope on open flat work and at higher amperage.
• Bottleneck and slip-on variants trade access against coverage - pick by joint geometry, not by habit.

Recess matters as much as profile

Nozzle recess sets how far the contact tip sits back from the nozzle face, and it changes your effective stickout. Flush or extended tips suit short-circuit transfer and thin material; a recessed tip protects the tip at high amperage and in spray transfer. Standardise the recess across your shop and your welders stop compensating for it by feel.
