The fittings are a safety system, not an inconvenience

CGA connections are deliberately incompatible between gases so that a fuel-gas regulator cannot physically be fitted to an oxygen cylinder. Fuel gas fittings are left-hand threaded and notched for the same reason. Adapting between them defeats a design whose failure mode is a fire. If a regulator will not fit the cylinder, the answer is the correct regulator, never an adapter.

Oxygen fittings must stay free of oil and grease. Oxygen and hydrocarbons under pressure ignite - this is a documented cause of serious incidents, not a theoretical caution.

Regulators and flowmeters

Flowmeter regulators read directly in cubic feet per hour and are the standard for MIG and TIG shielding gas. Two-stage regulators hold delivery pressure steady as the cylinder empties, which matters on long runs and precision TIG. A regulator whose delivery pressure creeps with the torch closed has a failing seat and must come out of service.

Torches, tips and hose

Cutting and heating torches with tips sized to material thickness - an oversized tip wastes gas and widens the kerf, an undersized one will not sustain the cut. Twin hose is colour-coded and thread-coded to the gas. Replace hose that has been kinked, crushed or oil-contaminated rather than taping it.

Set the flow once, properly

Too little shielding gas gives porosity. Too much creates turbulence at the nozzle that draws air into the shielding envelope and gives you the same porosity at a higher cost. Set it to the process and the nozzle size and leave it alone.
