Choose by the job, not by the shelf

• Cutting discs - Type 1 flat for the straightest, fastest cut; Type 27 depressed centre where the guard or your hand needs clearance. Thin cuts faster and cooler, thick lasts longer and tolerates side load.
• Grinding discs - for weld dressing and heavy stock removal. Depressed centre, run at an angle to the work.
• Flap discs - grind and finish in one operation, leaving a far better surface than a grinding wheel. More expensive per disc, frequently cheaper per job because they remove a step.
• Fiber discs - on a backing pad, for aggressive stock removal and blending on flat work. Ceramic grain lasts dramatically longer than aluminium oxide on stainless and hard alloys.
• Surface conditioning - non-woven abrasives for cleaning, blending and finishing without cutting into the base metal.
• Wire wheels and brushes - for scale, slag and rust removal.

Grain matters more than grit number

On stainless and hard alloys, ceramic grain cuts cooler and lasts several times longer than aluminium oxide. On mild steel at low volume the cheaper grain is often the right economics. On stainless it rarely is - heat from a dull abrasive is what causes the discolouration and distortion you then have to correct.

Never cross-contaminate stainless

An abrasive used on mild steel carries iron particles. Used afterwards on stainless it embeds them in the surface, and they rust. Buy contaminant-free abrasives specified for stainless and store them separately. This is one of the most common causes of rust spotting on finished stainless work, and it is entirely avoidable.

Respect the RPM rating

Every disc carries a maximum safe RPM. Running one above its rating on a faster grinder is how discs disintegrate. Match the disc to the tool and keep the guard on.
