What non-woven abrasive does differently
A bonded abrasive cuts into the base metal. A non-woven abrasive is an open nylon web with grain distributed through it, so it conforms to the surface and removes contamination, oxide and discolouration without meaningfully cutting the parent material.
That distinction is the whole point. When you need to clean a weld, remove heat tint or blend a transition without changing the dimension or leaving grinding marks, this is the product.
Where it earns its place
- Weld cleaning on stainless - removing heat tint without the aggressive scratch pattern a flap disc leaves behind.
- Blending - softening a ground transition so it disappears into the surrounding surface.
- Pre-weld preparation - stripping oxide and light contamination from the joint area without gouging it.
- Finishing - producing a consistent directional or satin surface on exposed work.
Hand pads for what a machine cannot reach
Inside corners, tube, and anything where a disc will not sit flat. Also the right tool for the final pass by hand when the finish has to be consistent across a fabrication.
Still keep stainless separate
Non-woven abrasives pick up and carry iron particles exactly as bonded ones do. A pad used on mild steel will put iron into stainless and it will rust.
Cleaning stainless is not cosmetic
The heat tint beside a stainless weld is a chromium-depleted layer and it corrodes in service. Removing it mechanically or with pickling paste restores the passive layer.
