Jackets

Flame-resistant welding jackets, sleeves and aprons in leather and FR cotton. The jacket is the difference between a spark that lands and a spark that burns, and the one piece of PPE most likely to be left on the hook because it is too hot to wear.

Leather or FR cotton

• Leather takes direct spatter, slag and grinding sparks better than any fabric. The right choice for overhead work, heavy stick, gouging and anywhere the sparks come back at you. Heavier, hotter, and more durable.
• FR cotton is dramatically more wearable across a full shift, breathes, and handles light to medium MIG and TIG work. Flame resistance is inherent to the treated fabric, not a coating that washes out - but follow the laundering instructions, because the wrong detergent can compromise it.
• Combination jackets put leather on the sleeves and shoulders where the sparks land, and FR cotton on the back for breathability. For most shops this is the right compromise.

Fit determines compliance

A jacket that binds at the shoulder when you raise your arm will come off. Sizing over the clothing actually worn underneath, and checking reach in a welding position rather than standing straight, is worth doing before the purchase rather than after.

Sleeves and aprons

Cape sleeves and bib combinations give coverage where you need it without the heat load of a full jacket. For bench work where the sparks are in front of you rather than around you, an apron is often the more practical answer.

Retire them on condition

A jacket with burn-through holes is no longer protective at those points. Leather that has gone hard and cracked has lost its ability to shed spatter.
