The hand tools that sit on a welding bench - slag removal, cleaning, fit-up, inspection and grinding. Unglamorous, constantly used, and usually replaced only when they break.

Slag and cleaning

Chipping hammers with spring or wood handles for stick slag, and wire brushes in long, short and detail sizes. The brush matters more than most welders admit: carbon steel brushes contaminate stainless, and stainless work needs a dedicated stainless brush kept away from mild steel. Cross-contamination is a real cause of rust spots on finished stainless.

Fit-up

Locking C-clamp pliers hold sheet and section for tacking without a third hand. Clamp capacity and jaw depth decide whether the tool reaches the joint or just the edge.

Inspection

Telescoping mirrors on ball joints let you check root penetration and back-side fusion on work you cannot roll over. Cheap insurance against a rejected weld.

Grinding

Angle grinders sized for 4.5 and 5 inch discs cover cutting, weld dressing and surface prep. Match the grinder speed to the disc rating - a disc run above its rated RPM is a serious hazard, not a performance gain.
