Steel Stick Electrodes

Mild and structural steel stick electrodes, by AWS classification and diameter. This is the single highest-volume consumable line in the business, and the one where the classification on the box is the specification for the job.

The four classifications, and when each is right

  • E6010 - cellulosic coating, DC only, deep digging penetration. The electrode for root passes, pipe work, and material that is rusted, painted or otherwise less than clean. The arc is aggressive and takes practice to control.
  • E6013 - rutile coating, soft arc, easy strike and restart, shallow penetration. Sheet, light fabrication, general repair and training. Forgiving in every direction except penetration.
  • E7014 - iron powder in the coating gives high deposition and a notably smooth bead. The choice when you need to fill fast on clean material and appearance matters.
  • E7018 - low hydrogen, 70,000 psi tensile. The structural standard and the electrode specified on most code work. Runs best on DC with a short arc and does not tolerate whipping.

Diameter is chosen by thickness and position

Larger diameters deposit faster and demand more current, which is fine flat and downhand. Out of position, smaller diameters give you a puddle you can actually control. Reaching for whatever is open on the bench is how jobs get rejected.

E7018 and moisture

Low hydrogen only remains low hydrogen while it is dry. E7018 begins reabsorbing atmospheric moisture within hours of the container being opened, and the hydrogen it then carries into the weld causes delayed cracking - the kind that appears after the job has been signed off. Rod ovens and sealed storage are stocked for this reason and are not an optional extra on code work.
