Steel MIG Wire

Solid MIG wire for mild and structural steel. ER70S-6 is the workhorse: it carries enough silicon and manganese as deoxidisers to tolerate mill scale and light surface contamination, which is why it forgives the material most shops actually weld rather than the material in the textbook.

Diameter is a heat decision

Smaller diameters run at lower current and give better control on thin material and out of position. Larger diameters deposit faster and need the amperage to match. The wire on the machine should follow the job, not the other way round - a shop running one diameter for everything is compensating with technique on half its work.

Keep it dry and keep it clean

Steel wire rusts on the spool. A partly used spool left on an open feeder for weeks picks up surface oxidation that goes straight into the weld as porosity. Bag part-used spools, and do not run wire that has visibly discoloured.

Match the drive rolls

Solid steel wire wants V-groove drive rolls. Knurled rolls are for flux-cored wire and will deform solid wire, causing feed problems and shaving that clogs the liner.
