Shields

Shields, heat shields, deflectors and ohmic-sensing caps for plasma cutting torches. The shield is the outermost part of the consumable stack and the one taking the direct heat, spatter and mechanical contact.

What the shield actually does

  • Protects the stack. It takes the molten spatter blown back from the cut, which would otherwise weld itself to the nozzle and destroy it.
  • Sets standoff. On drag-cutting shields, the shield face maintains the gap between nozzle and workpiece. Standoff height is one of the biggest single influences on cut quality.
  • Carries the ohmic signal. On ohmic-sensing shields, the shield is the electrical contact a CNC table uses to find the plate surface before piercing. A pitted or spatter-coated ohmic shield causes initial height sense failures that look like table faults.

Replace on condition

A shield with spatter build-up around the orifice is already distorting the gas flow. A shield that has been dragged until the face is worn thin has changed your standoff, and with it your cut angle. Neither costs much to replace.

Match the torch, not the picture

Shields are specific to torch series and often to amperage range within it. Powermax, PT-27, PT-32, SL60 and SL100 stacks are not interchangeable. If you are unsure which torch you are running, bring it to the counter or send a photograph of the torch head.
