Holders & Clamps

Electrode holders and ground clamps - the two connections that complete every stick welding circuit, and the two most likely to be running worn out because they still technically work.

Electrode holders

Holders are rated by amperage, but judged in practice on jaw grip and insulation condition. Twist-type and jaw-type each have their following; what matters is that the jaws close firmly on the stub and the insulation has not hardened or cracked.

A holder whose jaws no longer grip properly arcs internally. That arcing is lost welding current, it runs the holder hot in the operator's hand, and it burns electrodes off at the stub. If you are losing an inch of every rod, look at the holder before you blame the rod.

Ground clamps

The ground clamp is the most under-specified part of most welding setups. A clamp with a weak spring, corroded jaws or a loose cable lug puts resistance in series with your arc. The symptoms - unstable arc, machine seeming underpowered, work heating at the clamp - get blamed on the machine almost every time.

  • Screw-type clamps give the highest contact pressure and the most reliable connection on heavy work.
  • Spring clamps are faster to move and suit light and repetitive work.
  • Rating should match or exceed the machine output, not the amperage you usually run.

Clamp to clean metal

A perfect clamp on painted, rusted or galvanised material is a poor connection. Grind a contact patch.
