TIG Torches

TIG torches and torch bodies for air-cooled and water-cooled use. The torch is the part of a TIG setup you hold for eight hours, and the one most often chosen on price and regretted on comfort.

Air-cooled or water-cooled

Air-cooled torches are simpler, lighter at the bench and need no cooler. They are rated for lower duty cycles and get uncomfortably hot on sustained high-amperage work. Water-cooled torches run cooler in the hand, carry far more current for their physical size, and are noticeably slimmer - which matters more than most people expect when you are working into a corner. The trade is a cooler, a pump and coolant to maintain.

Rigid, flexible and valve heads

• Rigid heads are the standard and the most durable.
• Flexible heads bend to reach awkward joints and are worth having on repair and fabrication work.
• Valve torches carry a gas valve on the torch body for use on machines with no post-flow control - common on stick machines being used for scratch-start TIG.

Amperage rating is a duty-cycle rating

A torch rated at 200A is rated at a stated duty cycle, usually with a specific gas and electrode. Sizing a torch at exactly your maximum working amperage leaves nothing in hand. Size up one step if you run long beads.

Order the consumables with the torch

Collets, collet bodies, cups and back caps are series-specific. Buying a torch without a consumable kit means a second order before you can strike an arc.
