Cutting Discs

Abrasive cutting discs for angle grinders and chop saws, in Type 1 flat and Type 27 depressed centre profiles.

Type 1 or Type 27

• Type 1 (flat centre) cuts on the edge and gives the straightest, fastest cut. The default for cut-off work and the only sensible choice in a chop saw.
• Type 27 (depressed centre) sets the hub back from the cutting plane, giving clearance for the guard and the operator's hand on flush and awkward cuts. Slightly slower, considerably more usable in tight positions.

Thickness is a trade, not a preference

Thin discs cut faster, generate less heat and waste less material - which matters when you are cutting stainless, where heat is what causes the discolouration and carbide precipitation you will have to deal with afterwards. Thicker discs last longer and tolerate side load and abuse better. Production cutting on mild steel usually justifies the thicker disc; stainless and precision work do not.

Keep stainless discs separate

Discs used on mild steel embed iron particles. Using one on stainless afterwards transfers that iron into the surface, and it rusts in service. Buy contaminant-free discs specified for stainless and store them apart - this is one of the most common causes of rust spots on finished stainless work.

Respect the RPM rating

Every disc carries a maximum RPM. Running a disc above its rating on a faster grinder is how discs disintegrate. Match the disc to the tool, and replace the guard if it has been removed.
