Cable covers earn their price quickly

A TIG torch lead spends its life being dragged across the bench, over plate edges and through spatter. The cable itself is not the expensive part to replace - the labour and downtime are. Leather covers take direct spatter and abrasion and are the right choice near the arc; nylon zippered covers are lighter, faster to fit and better where the run is long and the abuse is mechanical rather than thermal.

Both also bundle the power cable, gas line and water lines into a single manageable run, which matters more than it sounds when you are working in position.

Water-cooled torches

Water hose for water-cooled torches is a wear item. Coolant lines harden and crack with heat cycling, and a split line dumps coolant into the work rather than into the torch - the first symptom is usually a torch running hot rather than a visible leak.

Run proper welding coolant rather than plain water. Water corrodes the torch internals, conducts more than it should, and freezes in an unheated shop over a Canadian winter, which cracks the torch head.

Power cables

Replacement power cables are matched to torch series and amperage rating. A degraded cable adds resistance to the circuit, and that resistance shows up as a torch that runs hot and an arc that will not hold at the top of its range.
