Kobelco

Kobelco stainless steel flux-cored welding wire for fabrication and repair of austenitic stainless steels.

Why flux-cored for stainless

Stainless flux-cored wire deposits weld metal faster than TIG and handles out-of-position work more easily than solid stainless MIG wire. The slag supports the pool and shields the bead as it cools, giving a smooth, well-shaped weld with less oxidation on the surface. It is the common choice for tanks, structural stainless and plant maintenance where TIG is too slow.

Shielding gas follows the classification

Most stainless flux-cored wires are gas-shielded and run on 100% CO2 or 75% argon / 25% CO2. The classification on the spool tells you which. Using the wrong gas changes the arc, the chemistry and the bead shape - check before you set up.

Match the grade to the base metal

  • 308L - for 304 and 304L stainless.
  • 309L - for stainless to carbon steel and for buttering.
  • 316L - for 316 and 316L, where molybdenum is needed for corrosion resistance.

Remove all slag before the next pass and before passivation. See stainless MIG and flux-cored wire.
