4.5" Grinding Disc - Aluminum

Use a disc formulated for aluminum and non-ferrous metals, like the Sonnenflex Silverstar (made in Europe) and Karbosan discs on this page. Standard steel grinding discs load up (clog) on aluminum, glaze over and lose cutting action. Aluminum-specific discs use an anti-loading bond that keeps removing material cleanly.

It is not recommended. Soft aluminum smears into the pores of a standard disc, which clogs it quickly, generates excess heat and can cause the disc to grab. Steel discs can also leave iron particles in the aluminum, which leads to corrosion and weld defects. Keep dedicated discs for aluminum.

Type 27 discs have a recessed (depressed) center hub, so the grinder's locking nut sits below the grinding face. That gives clearance to work flat or at a low 15–30 degree angle for surface grinding, weld blending and bevelling without the nut touching the workpiece.

Yes, if your grinder is rated for 4.5" (115 mm) discs. It has a standard 7/8" (22.23 mm) arbor that fits DeWalt, Milwaukee, Makita, Bosch, Metabo, Ryobi and other common angle grinders. Always check that the grinder's guard matches the disc size and that the grinder's RPM does not exceed the disc's maximum rated RPM.

Wear safety glasses or a face shield, hearing protection and gloves. Keep the grinder guard in place. Run the grinder at full speed for a moment before touching the work. Grind at a 15–30 degree angle with moderate pressure, and never use a Type 27 grinding disc for cutting. Check for cracks or damage before mounting, and replace the disc once it wears down to the label.
