The diffuser's job
The gas diffuser holds the contact tip, carries welding current to it and spreads shielding gas evenly into the nozzle. A diffuser with blocked gas ports - usually from spatter - gives turbulent, uneven gas flow and porosity even when the flow meter reads correctly.
When to replace it
- Spatter has built up in the gas ports and cannot be cleaned out.
- The tip threads are worn and the tip no longer seats tightly.
- The diffuser shows heat damage or discolouration from overheating.
A loose tip in a worn diffuser causes poor electrical contact, which shows up as an erratic arc and short tip life.
Keep the front end matched
Use Magnum PRO contact tips and nozzles with the diffuser. Mixing brands at the front end changes tip recess and gas coverage.
